2008 Cape Verdean Independence Celebrations at Boston City Hall Plaza
By Suely Neves
BOSTON - For the 22th consecutive year, The Cape Verdean Independence Celebration of Boston promises a wealth of free, family oriented performances, programs, and hands-on activities. On Saturday, July 4, from 2-7pm, Boston City Hall Plaza will once again be a favorite destination for parents with children of all ages as the Cape Verdean Community UNIDO present an afternoon of music, dance, visual arts, cultural cuisine, crafts, educational activities, and more.
From the main stage in this year’s celebration we are highlighting our “Cultural Fusion” program offering something for everyone with traditional and contemporary dance performances and music in the genre of kriol-jazz, hip-hop kriol, kriol-reggae as well as Cape Verde’s diverse traditional music.
This year we are “Celebrating Unity”, a theme chosen to honor those who, in unity and struggle, brought freedom to the Cape Verdean people but also reflects our history, culture and experiences as Cape Verdeans and Cape Verdean-Americans. The theme also coincides with the
celebration of CVC UNIDO’s 10th Anniversary. CVC UNIDO has been uniting and strengthening the estimated 40,000 Cape Verdeans in the Greater Boston area since 1999.
A Flag Raising Ceremony will be held on Monday, July 6 at Boston City Hall Plaza from 12pm-2pm, bringing together community members and prominent Cape Verdean and American government officials as invited guests.
The Cape Verdean Independence Celebration is coordinated by CVC UNIDO with support of the Consulate General of Cape Verde in Boston. For more information please contact the Cape Verdean Independence Celebration committee co-chair Suely Neves at 508-951-8914
