(BOSTON HERALD) – “Police responding to a report of a person shot at Ka-Carlos Bar and Grill at 33 Hancock St. at 1:10 a.m. found a 47-year-old man inside believed to be an employee who had apparently been killed by a bullet that came through a window after a fight inside the establishment spilled into the street.”
(FORCV) - According to multiple sources, the man struck by a stray bullet is identified as Manuel Monteiro known in the Cape Verdean circles by chef Manny. Mr. Monteiro was found and pronounced dead in the floor of Ka-Carlos Bar and Grill where he worked as chef. He was also a chef at the Boston Harbor Hotel and used to be a sub-chef at Phillips Old Colony in Dorchester.
Mr. Monteiro, a reputable chef, was an immigrant from the island of Sãnto Antão in Cape Verde. He was a generous and hard-working father raising two daughters by himself. I worked with him when I was a bartender at Phillips Old Colony Tavern about 3 years ago. I remember him telling me that he was working two jobs to pay for his daughters' college expenses and that once they graduated he would go back to Cape Verde and open a fine American style restaurant.
